Modeling Question CC Pro

Very new to modeling so please bear with me. I love the modeling ability and 3D carving in general; but there is one thing I either can’t figure out or if it doesn’t exist.

I’m modeling spoons. I’ve figured out how to model both the top (bowl side) and bottom (rounded side). However, is there any way to model both sides at the same time? I now have to disable either the bowl or the bottom. Gee I hope this makes sense. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Joe

One pretty much has to use either a pair of files or disable something.

My preference for two-sided work is to use Center-Left for origin:

and then have a top/bottom pair at the top/bottom of the file, then cut the top portion first as if “Lower-Left” was the origin, then rotate and set origin relative to the same physical corner using “Upper-Left” to cut the bottom portion (after dis-abling the Top toolpath and en-abling the Bottom).

So Will, do you use a dowel for guaranteeing the same position or just a corner L bracket?

To paraphrase: carve one side, flip the piece and cut the opposite side all using center left as origin all while either using a dowel or L bracket to insure same positioning after the flip?

It just dawned on me. If I use center left how how can I use the bit setter? Sorry for stupid questions Will.

I use a pair of dowels/bolts, and then re-do the zero relative to the corner which flipped.

The file is set up for Center-Left, the actual zero relative to the stock is set as Lower-Left and Upper-Left for top/bottom.

I’m actually working on a part which has to be flipped, will do a walk-through.

As noted, set up the file w/ a top half and bottom half using a Job Setup Stock size twice as tall as the actual stock, then secure the stock and set the origin relative to the stock as appropriate for which half one is cutting first.

Unfortunately, I managed to mess up the file I was working on, and correcting things dragged the cutting out long enough for the finance committee to complain, so rather than take a further hit to the domestic harmony quotient, I’m pausing things and will hopefully finish up tomorrow, and after that will work out some basic/obvious test cut to walk through.

There are a couple of YouTube videos which touch on this:
