As the title says I’d like to install the CNC inside a utility trailer. I’ve been doing shows for the last few years and missing out on custom work. Taking orders occasionally works but I lose out on thousands of dollars every year. People ultimately want the product now. Someone has to have pulled this off before. Please share any feedback you have.
There was one customer who worked up a customer drawer to place a Shapeoko 3 XL into an RV — on that basis, it should work, and a trailer ought to be easier/more straight-forward.
Notable considerations:
- the need to protect from vibrations — more than just a sheet of foam beneath the machine would seem to be needed
- a way to secure the gantry and carriage immobile so that they won’t shift, causing the stepper motors to function as generators damaging the controller
- power — my inclination would be a battery intended as a generator replacement which charges off a 110V line, and which outputs current appropriate to running the machine and the spindle and a computer (if possible, put the vacuum on a separate line)
- dust collection/noise — build an enclosure to handle these two issues
I’ve considered it myself - but have too many other tools to transport around to have a CNC mounted in my trailer.
It should be pretty straight forward - build a solid, flat table in the trailer for the CNC, add some blocking to keep it from shifting/bouncing during travel, maybe some Rockwool Comfortboard panels for sound dampening, dust collection setup, inverter generator for power, LED lighting to see what you’re doing… Dang, maybe I should reconsider my RV reno plans…
