Multi color sign - Packer logo

I’m trying to create some wall art with the state of Wisconsin and in the center the GB Packer logo. I want the majority of the sign to be natural wood (no paint). The Packer logo has three colors, the G is white, surrounding the G is green, and then a small band of gold.

How do I mask and paint so it doesn’t look like I’m a fourth grade art student? I have oramask to mask between the colors but confused on the sequence of steps.

Thanks in advance

How comfortable would you be doing the white and gold at the same time?

Paint region green (overlap into white and gold areas), mask, clear both white and gold regions, paint, remove masking

Thanks, I think that’s worth a try.

1st Step is to paint the Whole Logo Green.
2nd: Apply Oramask over the logo.
3rd, cut out the Oramask with a .25 bit and cut it .125 deep for the Yellow Section.
4th, peel away any remaining Oramask covering the yellow area and paint the area yellow.
5th Remove all the Oramask and carve out the G. I suggest an Advanced V-Carve .125 Deep to get the sharp inside corners.

Note. I used a .125 Depth with a .12 Depth of Cut. This will help reduce final sanding, but it will make the Carving take longer. You can adjust the Depth of Cut to .125, which will cut down on the Machine time but add to your finish time.

Another thing you could do is cut the G out of a different piece of wood, Like a .25" piece of plywood. Cut it just slightly smaller than the G. Use a .05 inner offset. If you do that, I suggest leaving the Oramask on after steps 3 and 4, carving the G pocket, and then painting the G pocket black. That will give the G a nice Shadow look.

A local high school has the Same logo but in different Colors. I made this for them last year.
Making the letters Proud turned out Amazing and added depth to the project.

I have used shelf liner rather than Oramask and it has worked fine before, but the last couple of times I tried it pulled up the paint in spite of leaving a week to dry/cure. Maybe oramask is better. If not, you may want to seal with shellac before applying mask to the painted surfaces.

If you are only painting, not cutting out the logo…

  1. Completely finish the workpiece. Let it dry at least overnight or until fully cured
  2. Apply the mask, press or roll it down really well.
  3. Use a drag knife to cutout the logo
  4. Remove the mask from all of the logo & save it on the original backing paper
  5. Paint the green. Again, let it fully cure
  6. Replace the mask, press it down well, then remove the yellow & white areas
  7. Paint the yellow & white. Let it fully cure
  8. Remove the mask
