My machine just quit

I was doing what should have been a routine job. Mid-job it just quit.
All the appliances I run with the CNC - a vacume and some lights all sharing the same powerstrip which is, in turn, plugged into a ground-fault receptical. The ground fault was tripped and continued tripping until I disconnected the vac. The CNC still doesn’t light up.

The control box on the left side doesn’t light up although power is available. Motion doesn’t see the cutter.

Am I hosed, or what?

I’d start by unplugging everything and waiting a bit — maybe a cold start will allow things to get going.

Did you check your power strip maybe the breaker on the strip is tripped.

Ground Fault circuits can be tricky. They can go bad but likely something the GFCI saw something it did not like. That something could have been transitory. So even though you may have reset the GFCI trip it with the test button and then reset the button. Check to see if something plugged in like a light comes on. As @avetrano suggested look at the power strip is working before doing too much more. If the outlet has power and the power strip is good then unplug your power supply to Shapeoko and leave it unplugged for a few minutes. Then plug it up and see if the Shapeoko comes on.

I have replaced several GFCI outlets because they go defective. However my next door neighbor always put up Christmas lights with extension cords. She ran the cords in the flower bed and when it rained some of the would get submerged. When they were submerged it would trip the GFCI and she asked me to replace the GFCI outlet. I tested it and it worked fine. As soon as the cords were plugged up it would trip. So I told her it was doing exactly what it was designed to do. She gave me a blank stare and asked me to replace it. So I went and moved the cords around and bam it worked.

I have one outlet in my shop that is not GFCI. I run my Jet 12-21 Variable Speed Lathe on that one plug because intermittently when changing speeds the GFCI outlets will trip. So the lathe works fine but I think there is some feed back on the 120VAC during speed changes that cause the GFCI to trip. Nothing is broke but some things just do not run right on GFCI. The shop vac is likely your issue. Those cheap motors make a lot of noise and could have been the culprit. Remember the GFCI is constantly checking between all 3 legs of neutral, ground and hot for minor fluctuation of voltages and that makes the GFCI trip.

I routed the power to another outlet. No joy.

I know what you mean about GF outlets. I plugged my JET 1640 lathe into one and they didn’t play nice

I just went down to look at the machine.

It works.

I swear to god it was not, when I posted last night. I had unplugged everything, let it sit, and then plugged everything back in. It wasn’t working at that time.

I went down today, flipped the switch and ka-chunck! I tried an initialization and that worked.

I’m pleased to say the least. This incident threatened to put a serious dent in our immediate plans, for fiber arts domination. Seems ike we’re back on track and the world is once again spinning in greased grooves.

Now can someone explain what just happened?

The power supply and the controller can hold a residual charge for a while — apparently that can be enough to confuse things if something goes wrong.
