Newbie looking for your opinion

Long time woodworker, looking to get a S5 Pro. I have space and I can manage the cost, but would like to heard from more experienced folks if getting a 4x4 is too big and rarely used and if the 80mm spindle has any significant down sides. Thanks.

My recommendation on size selection is:

  • if working with sheet goods, get a 4x4
  • if working with boards, 4x2
  • if your parts fit on it, a 2x2

For the Carbide 3D 80mm VFD the notable disadvantage, if one can call it that, is the use of/need for liquid cooling — the advantages of torque, ER-20 collet system, &c. seem to outweigh that for folks.

With the ability to use tiling the 4x2 can accommodate the same size projects as the 4x4. I would say the 4x4 can save some work (or play depending on your view) time when doing larger projects.

I have the 4x4. I never use the whole thing. In hindsight, I should have bought the 2 x 4.

The 4x4 is handy for people that process a lot of plywood. If you are just going to make regular wood/metal then the 4x4 is overkill. I have an SO3 XXL 32" x 32" and have only had 2 projects in 5 years that required the full capacity. With C3D introducing tiling I could have done my projects with an XL.

So it depends on what you are going to do mostly. You could buy for the exceptions but it would likely be overkill.

However overkill can be good.

I went with the 4x4 model since I have the space in my shop.

While I haven’t always needed it, I’ve had a couple of projects where that size was beneficial.

Regarding the spindle, I use a 65mm air-cooled one, so I can’t provide an opinion on the 80mm.

4x4 isn’t super rigid for aluminum, steel etc so just go with the 65mm if you don’t want to go through a bit of extra work and maintinence

I do not do work for money, so “production” issues were not considered.

I have my S05 4x2 in a two car garage sharing space with life. The 4x4 just made it too tight.
The price difference is not much. I found leaning over the 4x2 is fine. A 4x4 I would have to walk around.

I have a 65mm air cooled spindle. It will support a 8mm collet max, but most bits are 1/4 or 1/8 diameter shafts.
