Not encountered this before...stumped

After months of non use, I fired up my Shapeoko 3, and a couple of the motors (I think it was Y1 and Z) started making a horrendous noise, as if it was trying to skip teeth on the belt but no motion at all. After a few seconds it would stop. Turning the machine off and back on it would repeat the same symptoms.
I updated the to the current software, 640. No help.
Machine was working perfectly last fall when I last used it.

Power down and gently and slowly move the machine to the middle of motion for all axes (for the Z-axis move it all the way to the bottom, then back up to the top, then back to the middle) — is there any mechanical interference? Everything clean and all linear rails/blocks well-lubricated?

Power up and connect — go to Settings | Debug and then test each homing switch by presenting metal to it — does each signal as the correct axis?

Power down and remove both Y-axis belts, then power up and try initializing — the machine should initialize Z first — does it do so? It will then try to initialize the X- and Y-axes, the X-axis should also initialize normally, while the Y-axis motors should turn until they time out — do they turn evenly and in synch?

If they do, reinstall the Y-axis belts flipped end-for-end and swapped side-for-side and then try initializing again.
