Not getting correct z axis setting

After probing for x y and z, it does not appear that my xxl is getting the z axis zero setting correct. Im trying to cut out .75" pine but the z axis only cuts to .625" depth. I’ve read through a previous thread with a very similar problem and not been able to fix the issue.
I am using a xxl with z plus, a bitsetter and bitzero connected.

How are you probing for Z?

If probing only for the single axis, is the BitZero fully on the surface as depicted at:

if probing for XYZ all at once, then registered at a corner as depicted at:

Probing XYZ OFF the edge of the wood, NOT on top of the wood.

I’m probing for xyz, so I set it like your picture 3/3. The lip on the bitzero is positioned per the directions.

Does your endmill reach the wasteboard?
Is the first pass too shallow as well?
If you cut 1/8" deep, does it actually cut 1/8"?
If you jog an inch, did it move exactly one inch?

After recently upgraded to Carbide Motion 5.21 my Z axis setup is not working properly.

Trying to run a simple pocket and using the probe for my XYZ settings. Using the front right corner as my origin with the machine bed as the o,o,o point. As the job starts its running way above, also if I stop the job and try to jog the position the program freezes up. Any ideas?

Did you set your actual Z0 at the wasteboard or at the surface of your stock?
How did you set Z0?

I set the Z0 at the corner of the stock using the probe in the correct position. Made sure that the ledge was in the correct position and not on top of the material. CM521 does jog the mill to the correct Z +6mm position just before starting the job but once I start the run it goes way off.

But your Z0 is set at the wasteboard in V-Carve.

Correct (no negative Z values). OP is a little confused.

… a DUH moment here… I was confused because I tried to manually verify the XYZ settings before starting the job and the rapid movement command to set the bit to the current XYZ +6mm seemed to place the mill in the correct position, but that was because my setup was wrong all along…

Now still wondering why the software crashes after stoping the job and trying to move the mill out of the way.

I stopped the run as soon as I saw that the mill was just doing a ghost run. After stopping the job I tried using the rapid positioning commands to get the mill out of the way but CM521 freezes up. Not sure if this is a bug or just a way to prevent the machine from loosing its reference. The only way out is to reset the program.

I’m not sure where to go with my original issue as I’m completely lost with whats going on here…

Probing xyz with the probe entirely on top of the stock.

But you said you have the lip overhanging the sides?

Yes, the lip was overhanging the sides. I reopened the project in create to ensure my stock thickness was correct and it was. I played with the retract setting (the distance the z axis retracts when moving between tool paths) and was able to gain about .0625 in depth, but not the full .75 I programmed.
I also switched to a different project and did not have the same issue. It was a 3d topo map and it came out pefectly.

You mention updating the software. Did you update and resend the settings for your combo?

That wouldn’t affect the first pass cutting air. Neither would the retract height.
If you take the probes out of the equation (uncheck BitSetter and just set Z-zero by eye) do you get the save results?

I think I did, but not 100% sure. I will double check that.

The issue seems to be cleared up. Must have been not setting up properly during initialization. Thanks to all that have offered input! Have a safe new year!
