Not sure how to get started with very early (SN#203) Nomad 883

I just bought a Nomad 883 that was advertised as a Nomad 3 pro. Unfortunately when I got it home and attempted to get setup it appears to be a very early Nomad 883. It is serial number 203. The power switch is on the lefthand upper back panel. When I attempt to connect using Carbide Motion it doesn’t recognize the machine and throws GRBL errors. I’m new to CNC’ing and did tons of research before buying in order to find a machine that I could learn on. Now it seems like I may have a machine with firmware that is incompatible with the Carbide workflow. Any advice on what I should do to get up and running would be greatly appreciated.

There are two ways forward:

  1. Update GRBL to a newer version that’s compatible with the latest version of Carbide Motion. Requires some degree of comfort with flashing microcontrollers, but here’s a reference to a previous case: GRBL update from 0.9 to 1.1
  2. Use an older version of Carbide Motion that’s compatible with an older version of GRBL. See: Downloads and scroll down to v3.

Hello, thanks for your reply. I attempted to run Motion v3 on Mac OS 14.4.1 but it just flashes open and crashes.

Hey, @fontis! I have 883.1 serial 234, and just this past week finally got it working fully with grbl 1.1h and using CM 651. I am just a sample of one, but it is possible! I’ll be happy to talk about my saga if you’d like.

Hey @Randy. thanks for reaching out. yes, any help would be greatly appreciated. I’ll have a look through your thread and see if I can get this working. As of now I’ve dug out an old macbook pro that can run Motion v3 and have the Nomad connected but it won’t run the Homing operation and it doesn’t respond to direct GRBL commands.

@wmoy I dug out an old macbook pro that can run Motion v3. It appears to recognize the Nomad but won’t perform a homing action. Also it won’t accept individual GRBL commands.

James, if you fire up CM and connect to the machine and go to Settings/Debug (at least that’s what it’s called in the current CM) and poke at the limit switches and bit probe with whatever you can reach them with (they are mechanical rather than proximity on an 883.1), do the radio buttons light up to verity the switches themselves are working (and noticed by the controller board)?

@Randy the only switch I can see is the bit probe (I’m guessing) when I open up the Settings/Log and push the bit probe I get no log entry.

Edit: when i removed the back cover i was able to see a limit switch and when pressed it does detect throw an error:
