Ok. I’m cutting 9 mm baltic birch plywood. Whats the best approach: 3 passes with the 1/4 bit or should i go full depth but way slower. Which approach is considered to be bettee for the longevity of the bit?
Generally shallower & faster will dissipate more heat & result in longer tool life.
There are, of course many other factors involved.
I try to avoid slotting. i.e. cutting a slot the same width as the cutter more than one pass deep.
So a 5/16" slot cut with the 1/4" tool using a pocket or multi-pass contour (Not supported by CC) will clear chips better & dissipate more heat…
Kind of depends on the material quality. You may also want to check for any sections that are smaller and could splinter or break off due to a full dept cut. Feeds and speeds could cause your bit to heat up and dull quicker.
The bit depending on the quality of the bit will do nearly anything you want. Wood itself (for this comparison) is not what dulls a bit but the layers of glue holding it together and heat buildup is what will wear a bit out.
I myself start somewhat aggressive with speeds and you can always increase you cutting speed in the program if needed. if you find out that it is cutting good when changed you can modify the DOC in your file. Try it and see.
