The adults weren’t “competing” but we wanted in on the fun too. Who doesn’t love a Pinewood derby? None of the CNC cars made it into the top 6, with the extra wood we didn’t get the weight in the right place.
Many packs run separate competitions for the parents. It helps keep engineer/maker types’ hands off the kids’ cars.
Ummmm! Back in the days gone by the kids had to make their own derby cars. I guess some of those kids grew up and became NASA engineers and never forgot about their derby cars.
I let my son do all the designing, sanding, painting, etc. I just do the wheel alignment and the weights.
We have a special scale to make sure we are EXACTLY 5.0 oz.
I always volunteer to help the kiddos who have non-mechanically inclined Dads/Parents. You can always tell when they show up with a car that weighs 4.36 OZ. I help them add weights. It’s never fun to see a kid’s car that won’t even make it to the finish line because it’s too light or the wheels are binding etc.
Last year we won the District Championship, with the Red Wedge Car. We beat 1500 other cars.
This year we won the 6th Grade Open Division and 9th Overall with the 3d Printed Dodge Charger.
