Real new user here.
What I am going to try to do with one of my very own projects is to create a box that will store a deck of playing cards.
I did see a video on how to create a box and I think I can accomplish that now that I have played around a little on the machine and software.
What I want to do is to make a small slot on the side of the cutout so that I can reach my finger into to “grab” the deck of cards out of the box. Let’s call it a half-moon cutout. I think you get the idea. But it does not have to be a half-moon but that is what I would really like.
A deck of 52 cards is about 5/8" thick. So I am thinking that the bottom of the box without the top would be about 3/4" deep or a little less. I don’t want the cards to start falling out when I remove the top. I have not decided yet on the depth of the box.
How would this be accomplished and what tool/s would I need to do it?
How are you planning on fashioning the box? Router cut from thick stock?
See:
If you’d like to make the box up out of multiple pieces, what thickness of stock do you have to use and how would you fasten the multiple pieces together? What sort of lid mechanism would you want to use?
Yes, it is exactly John Clarks box design that I am starting with. But I just do not know how to accomplish the finger slot to remove the cards from the pocket.
For practicing I just plan on using a pine 2x4 and make the pocket not very deep since the 2x4 is inexpensive.
Also, I am using the free edition of Carbide Create and where do I adjust the width and depth of the tabs? I cannot seem to find that.
So what I do with my cribbage boards is make a rectangle but include a dogbone on the corners. This gets carved in the “lid” as well and the cards are easy to get out. It means you need to make you box a little bigger but that is how I do it.
To do it more like you are describing you would make the rectangle for the cards and then a circle. Overlap them however much you want and select both. Then select the boolean weld.
You have to make the box bottom bigger if you want to include a half circle to extract the cards. However this size box you could just take the lid off and turn the box over to get the deck of cards out and not need the finger hole. But if you want it just make the box big enough to add the finger hole. Just make a rectangle and then draw a circle that the two intersect. Then do a boolean and get what Ryan showed or the dog bone idea would work as well. But simpler would be to just turn the box over and extract the deck of cards.
It is your vision of how you want to make it but dont get tunnel vision.
Thank you all for the help with this. gdon_2003, you are correct, I did get tunnel vision and did not need the cutout.
Ryan, thank you also for your tip. I will use it someday.
