Please help! Tiling issue!

Hi All,

I hope someone can help me from losing my mind. I do tiling frequently and successfully. Sometimes I’m a tad off, but that’s user error for sure.

With this file and this file only, it’s completely off. I’ve shut everything down and brought it up again. I redid the file from scratch and saved them again. I’m cutting the outside on both files. The tiling set up is .25 overlay. I carefully measured so that it would line up. And this happened…AGAIN. I tried another tiling file and it came out perfectly.

Anyone have ANY idea what I’ve done wrong? I thank you for any help!

How are you aligning the edge(s), and are you moving the workpiece exactly 24"? How are you indexing it? Dowels, pencil marks, ???

I am sure someone will help with the tiling but if the already cut parts could be salvaged by taking chisel and paring a little out to smooth out the curve and save what you have. If this is just a prototype then people will help you with the tiling.

Hi Tod - yes, exactly 24". What I do (and always works except in this case) is run the bottom. Bring it down 24" (it’s marked with pencil underneath) drawing a line 1/4" from the end of the cut and making sure it aligned with that 24".

Again, this works every time - the file I ran after this worked fine. This file is the only one that does this. And I even redid it from scratch. Something went wrong and it’s driving me crazy.

Hi Guy,

Yeah, I saved it by using my scroll saw and evened it out. Thank you, though!

This is the weirdest thing ever. Only time it’s ever happened.

Thanks for the tip

Not sure what this means. Are you saying after the first cut you are measuring from the end of the cut to get the line for the next tile? i.e. This is 1/4"???

If so, you need to be measuring from the center of the radius, not the end of the slot. Or your measurement should be 1/4" plus the radius of the tool.

Bettter to put a line at zero on the first tile, then make a line that is exactly 24" from that line.
That line could be the end of the stock. Then you have a line on the table or fence that you align both marks with. How are you aligning the left edge? fence, dowels??

Since I work with primarily one size, we have it drawn on the surface. I did have a fence, but cut into it a couple of times and it became unreliable. I like the idea of dowels though.

And again, the way we do it works with everything else. I think it’s a glitch honestly.

I will follow your tips going forward though.

Thank you for your time!

My point being if you’re relying on the 1/4" overlap to measure your index line, you’re asking for trouble. For one, the end of the cut is not 1/4" from the 24 inch line. It’s 1/4" PLUS the radius of the cutter.

Use some kind of stop, fence, dowels, blocks… something that is perfectly parallel to the Y axis along the left edge to slide the stock along to ensure it’s not moving left-right or rotating at all.
Mark your lines 24" apart, as accurately as you can. If your reference line is on the table, use a square to transfer the line down the side of the stock so you can align them better.
