Will … I appreciate the assistance … but after 2 hours of trying and searching I cannot for the life of me figure out what you mean by inset and increasing it. To you this is something you perform in your sleep … to me I am missing too many of the detailed steps.
I do hate taking your time here, but like I said earlier, I have seen your methodology numerous times but never could understand it or replicate it.
I didn’t realize that you were defining an inset as an inside offset. I HAVE used offsets many times … GRRRRR … guess I had a senior moment
The circle was draw to get the minimum width of the letters in order to define a proper offset value. That was senior moment #2. I’ve seen you do that in other samples, but that didn’t click here to me that is why you were doing it.
Next is to play with offset values until i get a thin text line, or as thin as practical.
Then I select the offsetted vectors and define a no offset contour cut.
So … my CC test seems to have worked as you showed. But … is there a way to just select the offset letters for defining the contour cut or is it just slowly selecting the inside vectors ???
Finally, is there a way to SAVE just that constructed text and contour so that I can use it across multiple projects? Again … I am looking at a way of putting my name and date on the back of my projects for family members (mostly the grandchildren)
“I am looking at a way of putting my name and date on the back of my projects for family members (mostly the grandchildren)”: How many total spaces will this be and how many inches in length can the entire string be? ie, John Q Smith 17 November 2025 would be 29 spaces. I assume the material is wood, but what type of wood?
Bozo
Spaces are only meaningful if using a mono-spaced font.
Set the longest name you wish to use, in the smallest space you anticipate using, set that up, make notes on dimension and inset, save that as a template.
Bozo … Wood for starters … I have a lot of Oak, Pine, Maple, Mahogany, Cherry, Poplar, Plywood, MDF, etc. The inscription will vary … Grandpa George - 2025; George - 2025; Dad - 2025. Might go with 12/2025 for the date instead of just the year. There will be a lot of variation, hence I did not want to go with a wood burning stamp. Might at some point go with engraved brass inserts that I could recess into the back/inside, etc. Just need to get started somewhere.
Looking for small text … depending on how small I can cut it. Some softer wood would probably need larger text. Also found some nice new plexiglass at 5ft x 5ft x 1/4 inch. Gonna order some o-bits when the sale goes live for the plexiglass. Will also look into engraving brass, etc.
Lots of plans … most of the stuff I have made so far was for me and the wife for the volunteer work she does. Want to get some Christmas gifts going. There is so much to learn, so many techniques to understand. Been slow going with some serious back problems that keeps me out of the shop. It’s been just a rough 12 months since I purchased the machine. I forget too much by not using it.
Oh well … I ordered the 1/32 bit. Lots to try now based on feedback here. Thanks for your feedback.
Thanks for all your suggestions Will and SDGuy and the others. Been sitting here for 10 hours so far absorbing it all. Next is to try out the good ideas.
