Pocket Toolpath Max Depth vs Depth Per Pass

I have a single pocket toolpath with a Max Depth of .318 mm and Depth Per Pass set to .318. Why would CM perform two passes?

Rounding error causing the program to think that a second pass was necessary — to ensure only one pass is made set Depth per Pass to a value greater than Max Depth.

It’s a qwerk you’ll get used to quickly. I don’t know if V-Carve has this qwerk as well but CC certainly does. Set your depth/cut to .319 and it will complete in 1 pass.

Reality is it takes twice as long to cut a tool path but if you are only removing small amounts of material you get a better finish. It is kind of a finishing pass without a finishing path. As @WillAdams said above there are rounding errors. The steppers move in metric but there are only so many steps per MM so if you have a setting that is between the full step of the stepper motor it rounds off. We are talking very small measurements in the rounding errors but that contributes to small discrepancies in how a pocket is cut in CC.

Thank you everyone for the quick responses!
