Pocket within a pocket

Newbie here.

I am trying to create a Texas Flag with pockets for the fields, red/white/blue and the star. Ultimately i want to pour resin in these fields. Can someone tell me how to go about creating the star as a pocket within the blue field pocket. A pocket within a pocket.
Thank you

You may want to pour the blue resin and let it harden. Then cut the pocket for the star and pour your white.

Alternatively leave a wood border for the separation but depending on wall thickness and wood type that may be fragile.

I had not thought about pouring the blue resin first, then cutting the star. Great idea!
I had been trying to do the border technique. I couldn’t get the tool paths to cooperate.
I’ll try your idea.
Thank you Cullen.

That is the strategy I did on these.

The dry time is a pain but there are some things that can improve it.

I moved the pieces off my machine so that I could do other work while it dried. If you do that you need to have a way to precisely position.

I have done that before. I printed the Carbide right angle fence and secured it to my waste board. That way I can put the project back in the same spot and use the BitZero to make sure X/Y/Z is set the same.
Those coasters(?) look really great.

Yes that are coasters. Thanks.
Here was another similar job

In this one I filled the whole thing with black first and then came back for the other colors.

In retrospect that was a waste of black. Maybe should have done all white first

If you want a pocket within a pocket cut the first pocket. Lets say you want 1/4" pocket. Then for the second pocket just use the starting depth as 1/4" and set your depth. Depending on the depth of the first pocket and the closeness to the edges make sure your collet nut does not hit the wall of the first pocket.

Guy, I think he means he wants the blue union field and the stars flush, but 2 different colors. (Not 2 different depths).

If you cut adjoining shapes as separate pockets with a wood border between them, if using V-carve there will be a “dam” or “wall” between them, and if it doesn’t line up perfectly you may or may not see the wood.

I think Cullen had the right solution, cut the union as a solid rectangle & pour the blue. Then cut the stars into the blue epoxy & pour the white.

When I have 2 colors and adjacent shapes that are larger & I don’t want to waste so much epoxy, I just overlap the shapes a bit so the 2nd pocket is cutting into the epoxy from the 1st so you get a nice sharp clean edge.

Tod is correct. Sorry I couldn’t describe it better. I had envisioned a “wall” between the blue Union field and the white star. But what Cullen has described will probably look better. I am going to try that method first.
I have never used resin before so it will be a learning process.
Thank you all for your input and support.

I finished the flag. For the first time using ER, I am happy with how it turned out. Thank you everyone for their input.

Nice flag. Fact about Texas Flag: The Texas flag is the only state flag that is allowed to be flown at the same level as the American flag. The reason is Texas was an independent country before joining the US. I think Texas is the only state that can legally succeed from the US to become an independent country. So in short “Dont Mess With Texas”.

Most people have heard of the 6 flags over Texas. I live near Nacogdoches Texas and it was the first city in Texas. Nacogdoches started as a Spanish mission. Nacogdoches has had 9 flags flown over it.

France (1685-1689)
Spain (1519-1821)
Gutiérrez-Magee (1812-1813)
Dr. James Long (1819-1821)
Mexico (1821-1836)
Fredonia Rebellion (1826-1827)
Lone Star (1836-1846)
Confederate Stars & Bars (1861-1865)
United States of America (1846-1861, 1865-present)

Last year for our annual 2x4 contest I carved a two sided American flag on 2x4’s planned and glued together. I just used acrylic paint to paint old glory.

On this one I used Rub and Buff to put the gold border on.

This flag hangs in my shop. I reverse it occasionally.
