I think MasterCAM, or a reseller, typically provides the post processors (or they sell you one). I don’t think I’ve ever seen one offered for free.

Thanks rob i will look into this.

MasterCam does have a post for Carbide3D CM based machines.
I believe if you login to your MasterCAM account, you can search for the post

Hi jtclose i was unable to find it Are you sure?

I now realize I did not look for that one.
I do not have access to this anymore.

Look for a GRBL post.

Ok sorry i am new to this what is GRBL ?? Is this carbide 3D nomad machine compatible?

Grbl is the opensource firmware which we use on our machines.

Could you please direct me to a link or information so i can read about this? I am very confused! My apologies

There are a couple of pieces of software involved in a number of layers — starting at the bottom and working up:

  • firmware — this is the software which interprets G-code and results in machine motion, as noted, we use Grbl, other possibilities include LinuxCNC, Mach3, &c. — The main source of information on Grbl is the opensource repository for it: Home · gnea/grbl Wiki · GitHub
  • communication/control — some simpler firmware options will require some sort of software to allow the user control of the machine, for our machines, that is Carbide Motion
  • CAM — obviously, you are concerned about MasterCAM — CAM software often requires a “post-processor” to determine how toolpath information should be converted into G-code
  • CAD — CAD software allows creation of designs at a high-level, which may then be saved out in a format such as DXF, STL, or STEP which may be loaded into a CAM program to make G-code to send to a machine

There is a user Glossary at:

Wow this seems confusing, i used Mach3 Post Processor with Mastercam X7 with my old Taig machine, and never had any issues and worked perfect and was easy to use. I was kind of hoping this would he the same, but it doesn’t seem like it.

License for what software?

The Mach3 post-processor may work — Grbl uses LinuxCNC as a reference implementation, and the LinuxCNC folks in turn look to Mach3 — may have to turn off canned cycles and so forth.

There was a discussion a while back:

which indicates that a Fanuc post-processor may be pretty easily modified — that said, MasterCAM is a commercial product — check w/ their tech support?

Wish that was true, last time I purchased them they were $2500 each and that was over ten years ago. Mastercam provides some very generic free posts for the more common controls. He’s asking about X7, it was released in 2013, not sure how it’s even running on a current PC.
