Potential upgrades

Will Carbide 3D possibly offer upgrades in the future?

  1. I would like to be able to upgrade to closed stepper motors
  2. Would be nice to be able to upgrade the Z axis stepper with a brake. The gas powered strut is a funky fix to an issue that seems like an afterthought rather than planned out.
  3. Possibly a Masso controller? Would be really nice to be able to have a controller at machine, rather than utilizing my expensive laptop in a dusty environment.
  4. Would really like to have a taller gantry and more Z travel.

  1. This would require a new controller/electronics
  2. If you look at how the gas powered strut was engineered, it was definitely planned out
  3. Folks are free to replace their electronics/use other software — have you considered a Raspberry Pi? Carbide Motion on a Raspberry Pi — I do this on my machine in a RasPad tablet shell which is fine (if a bit clunky), and am looking to upgrade to a new tablet shell from Kickstarter (which I’ll report on once it ships)
  4. Lifts of various sorts have been discussed here, and there is the option of “gantry shift” on an SO5 Pro — could you provide an example of a stock or setup which this would benefit?

Will thanks for the quick reply.

Going o try out a Raspberry Pi thanks

I need more clearance because I’d like to carve acoustic guitar necks which are 4" in height plus a 4-5" tool protruding below the spindle.

Are the necks narrow enough to fit into the ~3.2" overhang cutting area enabled by gantry shift?

I will note that my own spindle setup has increased this overhang:

without any noticeable lever effects (but I don’t push my machine hard, just using the default feeds and speeds for the most part)

(and a further modification has increased it even more)

I’ve been looking at modifying the bench my machine is on for workholding — the idea is to frame the workbench top with aluminum under the machine and at the front to add:

(rotated 180 so that the metal lip is on the surface of the bench, with a similar thickness of material all around to preserve level)

I have seen posts that you can raise the gantry. You will have to look here on the forum for those posts. The upgrade is fairly simple and is reversible.

Pwncnc actually has 1" riser blocks which I have already purchased.

I just did my masso conversion from pwncnc. Added the 30mm risers as well. Feels like a great upgrade and have been impressed so far.

If you have not already purchased a rasp pi, I use a Raspberry Pi 400 and love it! nice to have the keyboard integrated in my opinion. I have a local network drive (Samba) that I use as a go-between from my laptop to the Pi for transferring files.

Sometimes my keyboards take a beating when things don’t go my way so that one could be risky for me. I have mine in a touch screen so Inhave to resist the urge to punch that
