Pressing mould making

Hello All,

I have a 3D model of a simple part :

I would like to mill a mould for a quick prototype tool for handforming of some additional parts for a project. I understand, I need a bottom shape and a top one and in the middle should be the thickness od the part ( 2mm )

If I make both sides in other 3D modeler and than import as stl - would they be exact ? Can those be made in Carbide Create pro ?

What sort of precision is wanted?

Hello thank you for a quick response.
I am out of my 3D computer at the moment.

The size is roughly 100 x 100 x 40 mm

The precision is not much of an issue as the material used will be preheated PES and final part is not visible. Thickness of the part can vary 1.2-2.2 mm

Thing is, that I am looking for a way to produce this and later also as a prototype tool for panels the size of 600 x 600 x 30 mm. I know this is closer to more advanced tool design but would like to know if I can do it myself :wink:

I don’t see any notable difficulties in the geometry or dimensions — get some scrap and try cutting some prototypes?

You should certainly be able to do this using CC Pro. You will need to develop the runoff around the trim edge of the part & offset the surface by part thickness for the other side of the mold.

Or you could cut only one side and vacuum form the part. This may actually give better results without wrinkling. It will however stretch & thin the material. But I expect hand pressing would do the same. Forming into the negative / concave side takes advantage of gravity and the material sagging when heated.

This is a vacuum form mold I made on my Shapeoko HDM

I had to go with a positive / male mold since the part was visible & the grain was on the top side.
