Used the MC Etcher for the first time yesterday testing it out. Used 1/8 thick acrylic and mirrored/flipped my image so that it engraved the back side. The bit did fine, however the acrylic was too thick to be able to see the image clearly when turned over. What thickness is everyone using when using acrylic for 1. General Purposes and 2. The LED signs?
Thanks
I use .185 (3/16) for most everything. If you buy Amazon pucks for LED lighting, that is about the right size… I just shave some nubs inside the puck a bit and it fits perfectly. I am at a loss as for visibility on a .125 sheet. I have never had that problem…but I typically cross hatch all of my engravings. You are using cast acrylic, right? Cast is best.
Yeah the visibility issue sounds odd to me, acrylic is sometimes called organic glass because of its clarity[1] so 1/8” should be plenty clear.
I’ve got a 1” thick piece in hand and it’s crystal clear.
If you can upload a photo that might be helpful in understanding what you mean ![]()
as well as its tendency to shatter, it’s sliced me open on more than one occasion ↩︎
Thanks…I will try to remember to do that when I get home from work tonight.
Cast acrylic with paper backing is clear.
Extruded acrylic with plastic backing is not and does not machine well.
