I am looking to purchase a 2x2 Shapeoko 5 Pro in the near future. I need to make an enclosure for it and want to have it ready before the machine gets here. In order to do so though I need to know how much clearance I should leave on the front, back, sides, and top in order to properly access the machine for maintenance and general access. I know the foot print dimensions from the machine specs.
Those dimensions clearly do not include the overhang on the front the gantry is capable of. You can also clearly see the drag chains sitting forward of that as well. The product description say it gives you 3.2" of clearance with the gantry in the forward position. I am assuming that does not include the distance to the front of the spindle mount.
The way I plan on building the enclosure the back and sides are going to be removable to make maintenance easier, but I know I should probably leave an inch or two on either side to grab things that fall down there.
For the back, I am not sure if there is any clearance needed. I know the Sweepy Pro extends back behind the gantry, but I am not sure if it goes further back than the stepper motors sit.
For the top I am assuming the distance listed in the foot print is to the top of the Z axis stepper motor and I should probably add five to six inches to that for room for lights and dust hoses.
My current plan was 40" x 40" x 27" of internal space. 2.5" of clearance on either side of the machine. 5" of clearance out in front (that is actually going to step down and provide a vertical clamping surface). No clearance on the back. 6" of clearance on the top.
I did the gantry shift on my machine, and have a Sweepy Pro.
When it moves forward to tool change position the mount/Sweepy Pro project roughly 3.5" forward from the front structure of the machine — note that this structure is set back roughly 7/8" or so from the front end-caps.
Also, the right drag-chain needs a couple of links and is shifted forward as well, and at the tool change position projects roughly 2.5" in front of the face of the right end cap (I was able to leave the left drag-chain as it is).
When jogged as far forward as possible, the mount/Sweepy Pro project ~4 7/8" forward and the drag chain about 3.5".
When jogged all the way back, the back end of the Sweepy Pro is roughly 0.5" in from the back endplates.
Note that the shaft of the stepper motors projects roughly 0.5" further back from the back endplates, and there is also a plethora of wires and so forth.
Including the shaft at the back, the machine is 35" front–back. Add at least 3.5" to not have the tool change push the doors open, 4.875" if you want to be able to jog the machine all the way forward without it touching the doors, so yes, 41" deep should be okay.
Side-to-side the gantry on my 4x2 is over 59", but the motor and shaft project at least 1" on each side, so 61" less 24" should allow 37" side-to-side to work (but it will be tight — can you add an inch or two?).
That was the minimum size. I was planning more like 40" x 42". Like I said I plan on having the walls of the enclosure be removable for general access.
I saw a picture of an assembled machine on Saunders Machine Works and noticed the wires coming out the back right of the machine. How long are those? Trying to figure out where I can put the control box (though to be honest ill probably be replacing it).
