Rest Machining with Advanced VCarve, please

As many others have suggested over the last few years, please add Rest Machining pocketing ability to the Advanced VCarve workflow. Lots of confusing work-arounds out there that may or may not work, but boy it sure would be nice to be able to specify a big 1/4" bit prior to the detail work. Thanks!

Version 8 already has this feature.

Select the Vcarve toolpath and then you have the option to enable a pocket area tool.

When you edit a Pocket toolpath for a V carving operation one gets:

which only allows specifying one tool, which is quite different from the Rest Machining option Pro feature:

which allows specifying the tool which was previously used for cutting away material, so that the current toolpath will only remove the material w/in the geometry left uncut by the tool previously specified.

Yes, that is correct, they are two different features. I would like to see them combined or streamlined. I’m not sure what you are trying to tell me; are you making a suggestion for my workflow that I’m not understanding?

Yes, but only one pocket tool. I would like to use larger bits for larger areas, then small bits for small areas. As is now, I’m having to clear a lot of area with a little 1/8" bit.

Not sure how your going to get around this, even if there was a two tool pocket tool path in the VCarve option you still have to change bits from the 0.25” to .0125” bit to get to the detail? Or, perhaps I’m not understanding your question?

Yes, sorry for the confusion. The 0.25" just removed material so much faster than the 0.125", so using the larger bit for the gross material removal would speed up the process when making large pockets. For large inlays, allowing a three-stage process in the same way REST maching works would speed up the process.

I think the answer for me is to get IDC Woodworking’s “The Badger” 1/8" roughing bit. That bit will do in 5 minutes what my current bit with stock Carbide settings does in 2 hours :flushed:

I have the Golden Boy and it rips thru wood and what I use to clear stock quickly and then follow up with a finishing pass. You wont regret it.
