If I disconnect my Surface tablet from my Pro XXL will it have any affect on the zero settings? I am in the middle of a epoxy inlay pour and need to keep the X and Y zero but I have to go out of town and want to take the surface for netflix, etc.
As long as you don’t start Carbide Motion up connected to another Carbide3D machine you should be fine, it will carry on with the zero in the same place. Note, however, re-initialising the machine (say after briefly unplugging it or powering it off) can lead to minute changes of zero position due to the homing cycle. In almost all scenarios these aren’t worth worrying about.
As @flynnjs indicated the answer is yes the X Y and Z zero are retained subject to the accuracy of your homing switches. CM remembers the previous zeros and is ready to go. The zeros are retained after power cycles subject to you not removing the bit manually. If you change a bit manually then the Bitsetter and the internal coordinates are no longer synchronized and you would have to set Z zero again. The X and Y are retained. So never change a bit without going through the software interface.
Personally, I have NEVER seen zero stay in PRECISELY the same position. Usually it’s “really close”, which is close enough for most pieces I’m making…but if you’re doing something where the precision needs to be spot on - for example, tiling that has multiple continued lines - it becomes a visible issue. Personally, I never rely on it remembering.
If I need the precision, I make a toolpath that “Drills” a 1/32" diameter hole in a scrap area of my fence as the first toolpath. When I start the job, the gantry moves over the hole and plunges. If it’s aligned perfectly, I let it go (it cuts air), if it’s not, I stop the job and then use the jogging controls to figure out the offset to zero and re-zero before starting the job again.
For some reason I thought this was stored in the controller as a G52, G54, or G92. Good to know it is in CM.
