Retract Height in V7 Build 778

I am trying to understand how carbide create sets the retract height. Does it use the zero height that you set? I am doing a pocket in some maple that is .223 deep and then cutting letters at the bottom of the pocket. It looks like the machine is retracting up above the top of the wood not to the top of the pocket. I am trying to speed up the time to build each piece and I think I need to set this up with a different height and if so how do I set it so it goes to just about the pocket when cutting the letters? I have a S5 pro running V7 Build 778 for information

The retract height is above the top of material. That is if you set the top of material to set Z on.

On the same note, is there a best practice to speeding up carving or lettering on the bottom of a pocket so that it doesn’t retract so high? It seems like the only way would be to use a different file and a close to 0mm retract height or to re-zero on the bottom of the pocket so that it is not lifting up all the way.

At this time, that would be the only work-around.

If you use Bottom of Stock for the origin for both files, then all that has to be changed is the Thickness of the Stock.

You can do it in one file.
Simulating the entire job won’t work.
Do your engraving on the top of the box.
Then on the machine reset Z zero to the pocket depth.
For sim disable the pocket to see the engraving path. Examine the path from a top view to ensure no collision with the walls.
