S3 XXL - Calibration and Tuning

I bought a used machine and want to get it ready for action. Can you guys help me understand which steps to do in what order?

Here’s a list of what I think needs to be done:

  1. level bed - feet adjustment
  2. use tape measure to confirm square
  3. confirm tension of v-wheels
  4. bolt tension
  5. belt tension + check underside of belts
  6. tram router
  7. surface wasteboard
  8. clean crushed plastic off v-rail
  9. measure axis movement to ensure accuracy

The wasteboard is in bad shape so that will throw off any bed leveling I attempt to do.

You might have to surface/tram/surface.
I know quite a few people opted to not use the feet.
Might be worth picking up a maintenance kit incase there are cracked/damaged v-wheels.

Winston has some helpful videos out there if you haven’t seen them:

Use the original as a template to make a replacement or see:

make a new spoilboard. here is a document to help you create a good one for size and placement and then leveling.

I would replace the belts - start fresh. They are not that expensive and hard to diagnose if they are a little stretched in certain areas but not others. I’ve been happy with these kevlar from Aliexpress. GT2-9mm, I ordered 10 meters, which is two full belt changes on the SO3 XXL.

Agreed.

Our take is that a Maintenance Kit for an SO3/4:

will pretty much allow rebuilding a used machine to like new.

I’m doing a big aliexpress order tomorrow. I’ll pick up some of the belts you recommended but they’ll take a month to arrive. I’d really like to do some projects with the machine ASAP. What are some of the symptoms I should look out for in case the belts are problematic?

The unit I bought came with a full maintenance kit. I kind of want to do the bare minimum and only fix what’s needed as it comes up, because I need to start getting experience running the machine. So much to learn still, I’m getting anxious to start :grimacing:. I’m worried if I start pulling too many things apart to replace them it’s going to turn into a time sink (noobie problems, I’ll make mistakes) :joy:

Generally the machine seems to be in good shape, the only strange thing I’ve noticed is scuff marks on the rails (I can take some pics tomorrow). Something was rubbing, like tons of plastic shavings built up and got pressed against the rails.

I’m thinking of making an aluminum fence or some clamps as my first cutting test (I’ll do hello world first with the sharpie).

In my experience doing support, folks who disassemble, and re-assemble used machines installing the Maintenance Kit are more successful at troubleshooting if necessary than those who rely on a machine assembled by someone else.

It’s a worthwhile investment of time and effort.

Ok, it’s painful to hear but it makes sense and I appreciate you steering me in the right direction.

Is there a video that covers how to do the full replacement process? Seems like I’d basically be tearing down and rebuilding the whole machine to an extent. I don’t want to overload the forum with too many questions.

  • Assembled Delrin V Wheels (16pcs)
  • 9mm Belts (1200mm x 3pcs)
  • 6mm Z-axis belt (1pc)
  • Eccentric HD Nuts (8pcs)
  • M5 x 18 Screws (8pcs)
  • M5 x 20 Screws (8pcs)
  • GT2 9mm, 6.35mm bore pulleys (3pcs)

I have everything on this list except 3x1200mm 9mm belt (there are 2 of that length but they appear lightly used, so I think the guy already swapped those belts out). There’s also a bag with a very long length of aftermarket belt marked “gates 9mm”. It appears he used the belts from the maintenance kit and saved the old ones for whatever reason. He didn’t seem to change the Z belt. He installed HDZ so I’m not sure if it still uses that belt.

The HDZ does not need a belt.

The Gates belts might be actual Gates-branded belts, which in my experience are excellent and worth the added cost.
