I see a lot of talk about spindles and was wondering if the my S3XXL Z-Plus can handle sufficiently or is there any type of weight restriction that I need to be worried about on the Z Axis?
Are the current C3D offerings (air cooled) compatible with the S3XXL and if so, what controller is needed for compatibility?
Anyone with experience with non C3D spindles or can provide recommendations? 110V / Air cooled is what I am interested in.
Thanks in advance for any info…
The big concern about using a weightier spindle is wear on the anti-backlash nut — this is an easily replaced part:
That said, the official recommendation is get an HDZ.
Thanks Will! That’s why I ask the experts!
@dnm122865 I just upgraded my older model 4XL to the HDZ and C3D 65mm Spindle… Works awesome. I also bought a maintenance kit and changed out the old belts and V wheels
I have the S3 Xl + Z Plus and the 65mm spindle, works great. Certainly you could get the 65mm spindle first, then decide later if you want to upgrade to the HDZ.
If you want the 80mm spindle, I’d jump directly to the HDZ.
I also mounted the air cooled 65mm C3D spindle in a Z+ and it worked great. I would definitely take the time to freshen up the anti-backlash nut assembly, it couldn’t hurt.
I have the 65mm water cooled spindle in the Z Plus on a Pro XXL and have not had any issues with it.
In the amount of time I have had it it has only lowered to the spoil board at power off a couple
Of times.
