When I power down the machine, the Z-axis slowly falls onto the stock. How can I prevent this from happening? I can see this getting REALLY annoying in after the 2nd time it happens.

The weight of the spindle overcomes the resistance of the Z axis. That makes the Z drop when power is off. As @WillAdams you can get the gas struts. The poor boy way is to place a piece of rigid foam under the Z before powering off so the Z has a soft landing.
