Sand for a Project Finish?

Let me start by saying I’m not in any way, shape or form a fan of social media but I saw a video today on a social media reel where the guy makes a sign with a CNC then sifts black sand all over it, brushes off the high spots of the sign leaving the sand only in the areas that are cut away. He then uses a squeeze bottle to apply a polyurethane over the complete sign. It looked kinda cool.
Anyone ever tried this finishing method?

Interesting idea. Kind of a texture look using real texture.

I have seen the videos you reference. It does have an interesting look and brings new meaning to the word sanding.

I was wondering where he got the black sand and then wondering about doing more colorful combinations.

Black sand is normally used in sand blasters. I have bought it in 50 pound bags before.

did not try the sand thing, but this:

made some of those:

with that technique, gel stain certainly is something to consider. For just one top coat it means 5 layers, for really nice top coat for outdoors I applied 9 layers. Is some work, does not come cheap, that is why they do not sell like hotcakes…

You mind posting a link of that sand sign?

yeah it is actually a pretty neat technique. The sand fills the engraved areas nicely and the polyurethane locks it in, giving a cool contrast. Just need to make sure the surface is clean and sealed properly so the sand sticks well and does not bleed into the top surface.
