I have a ton of scrap wood all over the place and finally decided to figure out a way to organize it. I have these metal shelves that take a 2x4 sheet of plywood in the bottom and freed up a couple of shelves. The openings are 16" tall and I wanted bins that are smaller and some that are larger.
I forget the exact dimensions of them but the smaller ones are around 7.5in square-ish. I made them with a mix of 3/4" and 1/2" plywood that I had available and the base has notches cut into it as pockets for the vertical dividers to fit into. The middle shelf has notches that go halfway in and the dividers have notches going the opposite way so they can slide in. It was a tight fit and took some trial and error before I figured out how to get the sides in because it’s a pretty perfect fit. The dividers are around 15.5" tall to give some wiggle room in the 16" opening.
I updated the files so everything is expecting 3/4" plywood but you’ll probably want to tweak things if you cut it yourself. I was able to get 3 dividers on a 2x4 sheet because my opening was only 16" tall. If I wanted something bigger I would have needed to do 2 per sheet.
Nice. My new shop has a a whole wall of those shelves. I think probably 24 feet or so of them. Once I get my tools hooked up again I may follow your lead.
The files should be pretty easy to modify in CC for whatever height you have your shelves set at. I found that i had to put one of the end dividers in first, then the middle shelf part, then slide the other dividers in from the front. The last end divider i put in from the outside of the shelf. It wasn’t the easiest thing but once I got it in, they’re nice and solid and take advantage of the full space.
The bottom actually takes the place of the wood that was there. I have a deliberate bottom shelf so I can have notches for the vertical dividers so everything stays in place and solid but if you don’t think that would be an issue, it wouldn’t be hard to remove the tabs on the dividers so they just slide in.
