Second project after the rabbits for my wife. Definitely did not have speeds and feeds correct. Had to stop the project and go less aggressive. I did everything here from importing background image, copying it and then editing in inkscape. (which I should have used the entire time I think.) I’m happy with this being my second project but I want to improve so please feel to critique.
I have found getting nice pocket bottoms with “larger” end mills quite the chore in pine. The combination of the varying grain density and overall sponge-like quality drives me nuts sometimes. Maybe, look into using a “finish” pass only cutting .01" to leave less marks behind. I achieve this typically by setting the depth of cut per pass vs the total depth of the pocket to have the last cut pass only having to remove .03 or less. Sometimes it calls for as little as .01"
sometimes a design like this can be done as a combination of a 60 degree V bit and the area clearance you are doing now (using the new advanced vcarve feature in carbide create). The V cut means you get sharper corners and a not-90-degree slope, which (depending on the design and taste) can look good
