Segmented Urn for Cremation

I am working on a Rosewood segmented urn for a friend. She only has a small bag of ashes so I sized the urn appropriately. The Shapeoko will be used to engrave the person’s ashes inside the urn. I have some bronze threaded rings I will be using to close the top of the urn. I have made a full size urn a while back for a friend.

The urn is gluing up right now and will turn the outside tomorrow after glue sets. I have to cut the recess for the bronze threaded rings and will epoxy them in. After the ring is dry I will turn the outside to shape. After the urn is finished I will take the top and engrave the person’s name on the lid. I will use the Arc function in the text to write the name. I will likely do an advanced vcarve .1" deep and use a 1/16" flat end mill and a 15 degree vee bit.

This is my second urn to make. Commercial urns are quite expensive and both recipients of these urns cannot afford a factory made one. Everyone deserves a place of dignity for their final resting place.

Here is my friends urn with his name engraved on top.

Fantastic work! As always thanks for stepping thru your work flow for your projects. It’s been a while since I have time to turn something on the lathe.

The urn is finished. A little clean up after the finish has cured.

The project is made from Rose Wood. Segmented with 12 segments per row and 8 rows segmented and the bottom solid wood. The top was engraved with SO3 XXL with HDZ. #122 1/32" and 15 Degree vee bit for advanced vcarve. The engraving is .1" deep. The urn is finished with Shellawax which is a friction polish. I did use Yorkshire medium and fine abrasive paste and Shellawax over that.

I may make a finial for the top but that would be the cherry on top. I am not good at finials but may try. If I make it it will have a 1/4" hole drilled in lid and glued in.

Olive and Rose wood are really beautiful with plenty of character.
