Shapeoko 3 set up

So im finally getting ready to set up my machine i bought used. It has the HDZ Z-axis and bit zero has a watercooled 110 spindle.

Where do i start

I used the manual when I bought my used 4XL. Even though it was “assembled” I found it was good to use the manual to make sure everything was assembled the way it should be. Good thing I did … I found a lot of loose, incorrect and some missing hardware.
The SO3 and HDZ manuals are in this link

We are updating our documentation to:

For the Setup Wizard see:

What liquid is best for water cooled spindles Antifreeze, distilled water or something else

I used a straight mixture of RV anitfreeze in the one I got from PwnCNC but I understand C3D recommends a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and distilled water. I don’t know what the advantage of a mix would be other than cost and perhaps lower viscosity.

This wheel is touching nothing how do i adjust it

You should find an adjustment for the eccentrics in the manuals and/or assembly guides that were linked to above

Is that normal

With the power on? No. If the belt is secure and the pulley set screw in place, most likely you have a failed stepper driver for the right Y-axis.

Power off just checking before powering it on

Movement with the power off causes the stepper motors to work as generators, pushing current back up to the stepper drivers — if not done slowly/gently/deliberately, it is possible to push up so much current that one damages a stepper driver chip.

The way to check a machine is with the power on, jog it to the center of motion for each axis, install a probing pin, then grab the tip of that pin and try to shift the machine in all possible directions — it should be steady/unmoving, if not, investigate what allows the motion. For an SO3 the usual culprits are:

  • belt tension
  • belt condition
  • loose pulley set screw
  • loose eccentric nut/V-wheel
  • wiring fault
  • blown stepper driver

Nice i hope i didn’t burn my chip out
