Shapeoko 5 pro 4x4

Recently got the 5 pro I love it so far I’m curious if anyone has good ideas for an enclosure or something to make it less loud. I work out of my garage and it’s not too loud now but I’d like to make it a little quieter out of respect for my neighbors.

There has been a bit of discussion here:

Get a spindle if you haven’t already, much quieter than the router. With a stealthsonic vacuum you can almost hear yourself think with the machine running.

I agree wholeheartedly with what @rogerwiegand said (those are the exact suggestions I would have made). Add to that the deep swepy, and you can almost go without ear protection … but don’t do that!

Things I learned making my enclosure:

  1. Drywall at least the interior walls (Plywood doesn’t deaden sound.) If you can get the stuff that is specifically for sound absorption.
  2. Put the S5 on a piece of plywood that is sitting on EVA foam and not attached to the rest of the enclosure. This decouples the machine from the enclosure.
  3. Seal all cracks
  4. Use Rockwool Safe & Sound insulation inside the walls
  5. Acoustic foam panels inside cut down on the highs
  6. Get a Spindle
  7. Get a Stealth Sonic Vacuum
  8. Make triple layer windows out of polycarbonate and EVA foam. (PC ↔ Foam ↔ PC ↔ Foam ↔ PC). The two air gaps will deaden vibrations.
  9. If using an air cooled spindle, add a snaking vent passage for heat to escape but not sound. Line it with carpet.

Unfortunately the windows will be the place where the most sound gets through.

I would advise to use Rockwool Comfortboard80 for the interior of the enclosure - stuff absorbs sound way better than any acoustic foam/felt panel product I’ve ever seen. It’s like the ultimate sound deadening material & fireproof too - so if your house burns down, your CNC might still survive!
