Shapeoko 5 Purchase & Build Review

Purchase Experience: 4x2

  • Purchase was straightforward.

            * The Good

                * One stop shop vs piece milling with other companies

                * Pricing for Items included.

                * Hybrid Table – Big plus for me

                * Packing was outstanding – Boxes were in good condition upon arrival

           * Not So Good – But Not a deal breaker

                * Ordered Early Dec - believe the build times were 10-14 days at time.

                * Checked in with support at a later date and said it was moved to the end of December – Holiday
                          time frame so understandable and no issue for me.

               * Checked in again early Jan and new estimated shipping date Mid-January.

               * Got Shipping Notification on the Jan 10

              * Had the same above issues with my Spindle purchase (Saw msg boards so understood what was going on)

Summary: Though the time frames were no issue for me I understand this is a major concern for others. I think a lot of frustration can be alleviated if:

  1. C3D is proactive with their communications. Reach out to customers to let them know times were adjusted and why. This goes a long way.

  2. Adjust verbiage in “Shipped” email. “Shipping label has been created and awaiting carrier pickup”. This gets rid of the perception that the package has been shipped when it is still waiting for pickup.

  3. For numerous inconveniences for valued customers offer some token of appreciation. Discounts etc.

Note: In reference to customer support. They always replied in a reasonable time with an answer to my question. I don’t want to leave the impression they were not replying to my questions.

          * Unpacking and labels were good if not outstanding in areas.

          * The packaging was excellent.

         * Did have some confusion on the base frames as the manual I downloaded did not have the adjusted
           verbiage for the 4x2 (3 base frames vs 4). So that required me to pause and research online. The
           latest one does seem to have it. Though it should also refer to using the first 3 slots leaving
           the last one empty if it doesn’t. Wasn’t hard to figure out but did require a little extra thought.

         * Kevin does a good job on the video though I think the focus is more on how fast we can put it
            together vs using as a true build tutorial (being nit-picky here).
         * Parts-Parts and Parts….Lots of parts. – Only issues were:
                   1. 2 missing extension track screws.

                   2. 1 wiring tray had broken tabs.

                  3. Not Perfect but not bad

         * Did not time myself because I was waiting for the Spindle to arrive but overall was a simple and
           straightforward build process.

          * Wiring does have corresponding connectors, just make sure you align the connectors correctly.
             (Kevin mentions more than once and also in Manual)

         * C3D Suggestion - To take the installation to the next level maybe put color code/number labels on
            each end – Not necessary as the wires seem to match up if I remember correctly. Might
            make things a little easier (Not sure juice is worth the squeeze) just an idea.

        * Carbide Motion connected and the Wizard was a simple walk through.

        * Initialized system.

       * Setup bit setter

       * Test spindle – wow really quiet – the shop noise will definitely come from the material being cut and
         dust collection.

Summary: I have not cut anything yet as I am finishing buttoning things up. As of now all seems to be working as designed. Though I didn’t have a time frame for this order I can say I am pleased with my purchase so far. Hope this helps
