Shapeoko Control Board Interchangeable?

Hey Guys,

I’m helping a buddy set up his Shapeoko 3 xxl. I got the specs, set up software, and got the initialization down. Unfortunately t some point in trying to set up the bit zero, the board (v2.4e) shorted. I called customer support and went through a video call with them, no visible burns on the board, the guy said he’d never seen anything like it and that I should get a replacement board without enclosure found Here

That was over a month ago, and the board has remained sold out. I’ve tried calling in and having them notify me when the board is available to no avail. Is there a chance I could use a newer version of the pcb? I’m kind of lost here, and currently my buddy has a machine that’s just sitting there, which makes me feel pretty bad.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you

The SO3 machines use Molex-KK connectors, SO4 and Pro switched to Micro-Fit, so using a newer board on an older machine requires adapter cables.

We should have replacement boards presently — please sign up to be notified when they come back in stock.

The SO5 has been delayed because of supply chain issues with their controllers. They just announced that they got a batch of those boards. So hopefully they will get the SO3 boards soon. As @WillAdams said sign up for notification.

To be sure you get the correct board/enclosure here is a short history of Shapeoko controllers.

The original Shapeoko controller had a big aluminum block attached to the side of the machine (or back for std) and the board bolted to that.

Later they came out with the BitRunner and you could get a kit to solder on the connector or get a new board with the connector already soldered on.

Around that time they changed the board and to retrofit you removed the old board and the aluminum block and the new boards mounted with standoffs and some thermal tape on the back of the board. The new enclosure has black thumbscrews on each end of the enclosure and a cutout on the front side for the BitRunner connector.

The original board has screws on the side ears to remove it and then the board was bolted to the aluminum block. The new one does no have the aluminum block and the cover top is removable and the base stays in place.

Hey guys,

It’s getting up on a month now, and the unit is still not in stock. I’m happy to McGyver some stuff together myself, I just need to know what to tell my friend. Saying, “It’ll be here soon” has lost it’s promise.

Edit: I did immediately sign up for notification of arrival after the initial advice.

I don’t believe I would have been as patient as you. And I get a chuckle that the forum “bot” claims that your issue has been solved.

I don’t think the Forum applies/selects posts as a Solution — not sure what happened there.

As noted, the boards require a suitable connector — in the absence of them, one needs to wire things up oneself — this was easier on the Stepoko boards for which some folks were replacing them w/ Gradus M1 Pro boards from Panucatt.

That’s what popped up as I was replying to Jacob.

@Foolish

I have an extra board I bought as a spare that I can part with, the board has “CarbideMotion v2.4e” printed on it. It is just the board though, no heatsink or enclosure. Message me if that works for you.

Hey steve,

Let me talk to my buddy and shoot you a message in a bit. Thank you!

You mean downrazor, I was commenting on WillAdams comment on my original post.

Kind of wonder if I shouldn’t grab an extra to keep around… Be rough if mine went down for any length of time.

Hey man,

I’m obviously not doing this forum thing right, I don’t see a PM/DM option. My buddy is interested, please let me know how you want to proceed.
