Received my Shapeoko Spindle Kit today but unable to install atm but hope to have installed soon. Anyways I noticed this right away on the collet nut and I’m curious if this is normal? It looks a little weird and shoddy. I can’t imagine why this is and should I get the nut replaced by Carbide 3D?
I can also say the VFD controller box has some weird grey like glue/paint runs on the front. This of course is only cosmetic but kind of strange for $750 but then again as long as it works and last. But the collet nut I’m curious about.
Yeah my thought as well. It’s definitely a bit more material than what I would expect. I’m not sure if anyone else with the VFD spindles has experienced or seen the same.
Dont know much about the paint but the milling on that nut is for balancing. The amount of acceptable is up to you, I would not be happy with that. Being said, it will function without issue.
From what I’ve personally seen, this is a not uncommon amount of material removal on a Chinese spindle nut. It’s a bit more than ‘normal’ but I would take a properly balanced nut that looks like a swiss cheese over a poorly balanced nut every time.
I don’t know whether Carbide checks the balance on the nuts and spindles before shipping but it’s pretty easy to hear when you mount the spindle and spin it up. Get it mounted, no nut and no collet and spin it up to speed, then stop it, put a bit and collet in and tighten the nut, if it vibrates and resonates as it speeds up then you’ve got an out of balance nut.
I’ve bought quite a few ‘precision balanced 24,000RPM rated’ ER20 nuts from AliExpress and about 10% of them are balanced enough to not trash my spindle bearings. The better ones look like they offended a Texan.
