Shellac over wood conditioner?

Can you successfully use Zinsser shellac over a wood conditioner ?
I have heavily carved pine that needs some moisture, but i want to seal it.

What is the wood conditioner?

Shellac can go over pretty much anything though.

I have Minwax Pre stain wood conditioner

They make that both water based and oil based.

It’s likely shellac will go over either. If the water-based leaves no residue, not a problem. If oil-based I’d let it sit a minimum of three days before shellac.

AFAIK the only finish shellac won’t adhere to is polyurethane. I used to be a luthier, one of the steps is pore filling which, in those days, I did with an oil based filler. This went on over shellac and shellac was again used to seal it before nitrocellulose. I’ve also used shellac over oil-based gel stains.

Most of my more recent shellac was made by from dewaxed flakes and ethanol but I used Zinsser products early on (1970’s). I’m not sure how much the formulation has changed although I’m sure it has to increase shelf life. Always good to test.

Try to suss out the date code on cans to be sure it’s less than six months old. A quick search turned up this, it’s 11 years old so not sure it’s still applicable. A look at the stamp on your prospective shell can might verify. You may want to do a more thorough search.

Thanks for the education @bpedit !

I have the oil based product for conditioner.

I bought a 6 pack of quart of the Zinsser Universal Sanding sealer ( wax free ) Product code 00854, because it was cheaper enough to jump on it.
I am finding somewhat conflicting information on deciphering the date code A4D12-3
I got what I got. All good.
