Sign making: wood with metal laminated?

The question is: what’s a good minimum thickness for a top layer of bronze sheeting over wood or high density foam?
I’m for experimenting, but the costs of anything including copper has gotten pricey and I assume I don’t want to use anything that’s too close to being foil…
In any case, maybe the question is just: what is the typical thickness used in this scenario?

Aluminum foil is cheap, if you’re just experimenting.

What sort of finish are you going for? Does it need to be robust?

If you bond a thin metal to a solid substrate such as a good plywood then you don’t really need strength in the metal as it’s more of a coating like paint.
