Simple Garden Caddy on the CNC

My wife has wanted me to make her a Garden Caddy fashioned after a wooden tool caddy to put small plants in. This is what I came up with. Very simple and easy but made the Mrs. happy!

One option would be to put an intricate garden related design and her name on the sides, some interesting curves on the boards, etc… Etsy is great for finding nice design features. That is the fun part of a CNC machine and the thing that turns nice into amazing.

Good point, Jim! This was my first attempt, but I like your idea! Maybe we’ll make a version 2.0 with a cool design!

I like the design. What are you going to use to seal/stain it. I made some swing seats and used teak oil. it has lasted for years.

Here is another idea. you can make one for her gardening tools.

Anthony

I used this Garden SVG file once on a project for my daughter’s garden area. I put her name in the space provided.

Hey Anthony,

Thanks! Appreciate the compliment. I was going to use Osmo Polyx-Oil High Solid:

Polyx® - Oil High Solid - OSMO USA

Do you have a better reccommendation?

Let me know if you want the files. Happy to share.

Thanks,
Roy

Oh wow, very cool, Jim! What bit did you use to do the artwork?

If the plants are in a container sitting in the caddy the Polyx will work great. If the caddy will be used as a planter I would use teak oil or some other natural oil and put a weed barrier as a liner to somewhat protect the caddy. I would also put several drain holes in the bottom to drain water out.

Please share your plans and thanks

Enjoy! Let me know if anything isn’t clear.

Yes - she just had plants in the tool caddy (as opposed to dirt and using it as a planter). Great suggestions! I probably should put in some drain holes regardless. Good idea!

Roy, put some rails / feet on the bottom to keep the box out of the dirt / moisture.

Don’t glue them so they are replaceable, or make them out of plastic / PVC. Rip a rail of a PVC board. I’ve even added a layer cut from a cutting board.

One could even paint the rails purty.

I used a Vcarve tool path with a 1/8" bit for the pocketing and then a 60 degree Vbit for the final carving. I carved her name with a 60 degree Vbit also. I went one step further and filled in the carved out spaces with an epoxy resin for contrast but that would be unnecessary.

Very cool! Thanks, Jim! I’ll give it a go!

Thank you! It just sits on our screened-in porch with some plants inside. I’m sure you could do 101 things to it to make it better. I realize I started off pretty simple. I’ll make a version 2.0 one of these days!
