Slight 'bumps' as I roll the y axis up and down

I’m doing some maintenance where I tighten the belts and clean the rollers but notice that the travel isn’f fully smooth as I roll the y axis up and down. There are subtle points of resistance. Is this normal?

Would also appreciate advice on how to tell if the y belts are tight enough on an XXL.

if you move the carriage too fast, the steppers act like generators and that causes little “bumps”… so try moving very slowly and see if it’s still there

Might also be flat spots, on your v wheels.

If you notice the distance between bumps is 70mm, then it’s probably flat spots.

Just like car tires in the cold, seems like spots will work themselves out after a few minutes of travel.

Also, if your machine has sat stationary for a while the V Wheels tend to get a temporary flat spot which takes a while moving to work out. As David says, if it’s about 70mm then it’s V Wheel flats, just send the machine back and forth on the rapid positions for a few mins and those lumps should go away.

As @fenrus says, could be back EMF. Disconnect the steppers from the controller board (just take the cables off) and if it still “bumps” is mechanical (flat spots on the wheels, worn whells, etc.)
