Slop in my Shapeoko 4 XXL Z axis

I’ve was making some cam clamps and noticed that when drilling the through holes that the router was displacing. I’ve had my XXL for 7 months now, with fairly constant use. I assume that I am experiencing slop with my router carriage. What steps do I need to do to fix this? Any advice is appreciated

With the power off, slowly and gently move the machine to center or motion for each axis — for the Z-axis, move it all the way to the bottom/top and back to the middle by turning the lead screw.

Power up, grab the tip of a probing pin/the shaft of the spindle/router and try to shift it – it shouldn’t move — investigate what allows it to move. Possibilities:

  • bearing in router going out — replace the unit
  • lead screw loose or wearing — tighten/replace
  • Delrin V wheels not fitting against V rails — tighten eccentric nuts, replace if need be
  • X-axis carriage loose — check belt tension, ensure that motor is securely in place, pulley tight on shaft
