SO3 Y Rails Needed

I would like to extend the Y rails on my SO3 standard machine. Do you have rails to sell (hopefully cheap) or know of someone that might have rails for sale?

Or if you have alternative ideas on extending the Y rails could you point me in the correct direction?

Thanks very much.

Longer rails are unlikely to be for sale - they are either part of an existing machine, or were purchased to modify an existing machine. Unless you can find a machine that for some reason is being sold for parts, there’s no reason really for them to exist.

The extrusion is custom to C3D, and is not available elsewhere.

If you were sufficiently motivated you might possibly find the short rails for sale, and then join them somehow to the existing ones. I think that that alignment and rigidity would be concerns.

At this point the only realistic mechanism for a larger machine is to buy one, and sell the one you have. If you can find a SO3 in a larger size for sale, then you might be able to buy-and-sell without too much out of pocket.

In addition to (or to reiterate) what @mhotchin wrote, you could find a SO3 XXL for sale and use the mechanical portions of it and transfer over your motion controller, or use the whole thing and sell your current SO3. The XXL has a 33" x 33" cutting area.

Between Craigslist, OfferUp and this forum, I see SO3s every month or so up for sale.

EDIT: The issue with just finding a single part is that unless a machine is completely destroyed, it’d be rare to find just a single part - especially one of the hardest parts to replicate.

Hi Allen,

You could try the Megarail 80, sold by AmberSpyglass (MegaRail - Amber Spyglass Ltd). They are not a drop in replacement but with minor modifications you could get those to work.

Dimension of the rail can be seen here;

Hope this helps

Michael, MadHatter and Sindre;
Thanks so much for the speedy responses.

I’ve not been lucky enough to find a SO3 XXL for sale within a reasonable distance for pick-up and the offers I’ve seen indicate no shipping. Plus, I’m finding it hard to make a SO5 Pro purchase (lottery? :smirk:).

The MegaRail is interesting; however, I do not have the skills to modify aluminum and wouldn’t know where to begin.

Thanks to your advice, I’ll shelve this idea.

Best regards to all.

Thank you.

I’m not sure the z-axis extrusion will work on the y-axis, plus I need two y-axis extrusions for my SO3.

Best regards.
