Searched for “sock” and didn’t get the correct results.
I’m pretty sure I saw some videos of @wmoy with a sock or cotton sleeve something on his router. Saw another random video on YT today with the same thing. Is that for dust protection? If so, why don’t I see more? I’m a super newbie, so I’m not sure if this is a stupid question.
I believe this would be @RichCournoyer — the idea is to keep particles out of the motor and in particular off the carbon brushes since they increase sparking and wear ---- esp. if cutting conductive materials w/o dust collection.
No, it was to stop large particulates from getting through, like aluminum chips. If you tried to filter out fine particulates, it would block too much of the airflow and risk overheating the router. You should be using vacuum dust collection if that’s your main concern. I used the thinnest, oldest sock I could find, and I had an idea to construct a chip shield from stainless steel screen material inn the future.
Pantyhose are a great option because they are see through and allow high air flow. Get the small footy type and snip a hole in the toe area, pass the cord through and stretch it over the head.
Although the look my neighbors wife gave me when I asked her if she had a pair she didn’t need was priceless.
