Spindle Feed, Speed, and DoC

I’m waiting for my 65 mm VFD spindle to arrive because I burned out the the Carbide Compact Router.

In the meantime, I’m getting ready to cut a plaque out of hard maple. The majority of the cutting will be done with a 45 degree v bit. I’m always confused when it comes to feed, speed, and depth of cuts on a single pass. I have no issues with poplar, pine, MDF, cherry and alike.

I know hard maple is extremely hard for the bit and spindle. My question is where should I be with speed and speed, I understand that too fast feed and speed will bog the spindle down and possibly break the bit. I understand that too slow will cause wood burning. Should I just stick with the Carbide settings to be on the safe side or can I go up a little not as much as doubling the default settings.

I appreciate the advice.

I just use the hardwood settings in Carbide Create — if need be I’ll adjust spindle speed using the dial, or feedrate using the override in Carbide Create — they are intended as a safe starting point in such lumber.

Naturally if you’re using a very hard wood, then bets are off unless one adjusts per:

(there’s a similar article on CNC Cookbook)

Thanks I appreciate the advice.
