Just got done with assembling our new 5.1 Pro, however there were no instructions on how to install the spindle. So we installed using logic, but we really could not get an idea of the placement or height of the spindle on the plate. Any suggestions?
I’m assuming you mean how high to install the spindle in the mount, yes?
The usual advice is to install the shortest bit you have in the spindle, and measure the stickout.
Jog the Z axis to it’s lowest point. Adjust the spindle so it is slightly less than that value you just measured above your wasteboard.
If you have the 65mm spindle … have a read through this…
@WillAdams has given this advise about spindle height. Put your shortest bit in the spindle/router and mount it so the bit just touches the spoilboard. Then just a little bit more. The spindle/router can be adjusted up/down for different situations. You might want to use a very long bit that needs the spindle/router to move up.
So we put the bit that came with the machine in and moved the whole HDZ down, but that would put the spindle right at the bottom edge of the spindle by the chuck. That didn’t seem right so we just measured about 4.5" from the end of the chuck to the bottom of the HDZ and tightened it down. Set up new machine went through initialization, and bit setter set and all seems to work. Tomorrow we will do our first cut and hope all goes well.
Can you post a pic of how you have it mounted?
I don’t have access to my machine right now but I believe mine is set at 2.5” from the bottom side of the spindle mount to the bottom of the 65mm spindle case itself.
That should be fine, as long as the Z axis will raise high enough with the longest bit you will use and clear the X gantry.
