My Shapeoko Pro XXL has been up and running for a little over a month. It has the Carbide Compact Router. Today it starting making this loud noise. Video below.
Bearings? Is there a maintenance I have to do that I didn’t know about?
I may have hit the waste board once or twice as I try to learn the machine, but do I really need to replace this router already?
I just started selling items online, so I need to get this resolved quickly.
It’s the bearings, they’re toast. Unless you want to wait on Carbide 3d, just go to home depot and buy a Makita trim router, Model # RT0701C. 160 bucks, but if you’re selling product, you need to keep your machine running. The cord is shorter, but what I did was swap the cord from my carbide router to the Makita. They are pretty much identical, but the Makita seems to hold the rpms more consistently under load then the c3d router did.
Thanks. Amazon has the Makita for $130. Since I’m close to the distribution center, I can have it here tomorrow. If anything, at least I’ll have a backup.
I would like to hear from Carbide, though, on what I should do with the current spindle, or if I’m just SoL.
Carbide 3D doesn’t consider the bearings a user replaceable part. The Carbide Compact Router and Makita RT0701 use the same brushes, bearings, motor, and motor housing, the Standard unit extends that to collets and nut. Just the Carbide Compact Router has a longer cord, different control layout, and the Makita is teal.
EDIT: and as pointed out, the Makita lacks detents for the speed dial and may vibrate off a given setting.
If you’re in warranty (12 months) we’ll replace the unit.
I think I read somewhere that the Makita doesn’t have detents in the speed dial. If that is true you may want a piece of tape to hold it in place so the vibration doesn’t change it. Not sure if that really is an issue though.
You can also get a Makita kit to repair the bearings that works for the C3D. Then you would have a spare.
I think my course of action is to get the Makita because I have customer projects I have to get done asap. I’ll send the Carbide router back and see if I can get it repaired/replaced under warranty. If so, I’ll have a backup so I don’t run into this again.
