Spindle on Z Plus

I am hoping to replace the router on my Pro XXL soon with a 65mm spindle, maybe C3D or maybe PwnCNC, not sure.

I have the Z Plus now, not the HDZ.
Is the upgrade to the spindle worth it without pairing it with the HDZ?

I pretty much have the setup you are talking about. A spindle on a Z plus. I don’t regret it at all. I love being able to control it from programming and how quiet it is. I have a 1.5kw 65mm spindle that I bought from Amazon for about $400 with VFD. I’m not sure how many hours I’ve put on it but I would guess 50-75. And it’s cuts great and true.

Many run the Z-Plus with the smaller spindle. The issue for the Z-Plus is the heavier 80MM water cooled spindles. So you could try it and if it does not work then get the HDZ. You can find the specifications for the C3D/Makita router weight and see what the weight is of the spindle you want.

The SO5 with the HDZ is having an issue that the 80MM spindles are falling to the spoilboard when the power goes off. That is because of the weight. The C3D plan is to have a gas strut to keep the heavy spindle from hitting the spoilboard. So an 80MM spindle might have the same problem on a Z-Plus and maybe worse because of the design of the Z-Plus. However I would think the 65MM spindles would have no problem about their weight.

I would think the Z-Plus would handle the 65mm spindle just fine while cutting. You will probably need to put a block of wood under the spindle when the machine is off.

The 65mm Carbide 3D spindle is a great match for the ZPlus. We have a Shapoeko Pro at work with the 65mm spindle and standard ZPlus. It’s ran awesome for a couple of years.
