Storage units are expensive

I have seen some of you guys post about wanting to run the CNC out of a storage unit. I hope they are cheaper than mine.

I have had lumber in mine for years and they kept jacking up the rent. When they announced it was going to $225 next month that was the last straw.

We spent yesterday moving it to our covered patio until I can find a better solution. I still need to put up some plastic to stop the sideways rain.

It doesn’t look like as much spread out that way but moving it when the “feels like” temp was 107 made it seem like an awful lot. Most of it is 2” thick walnut that I acquired when I worked for Gulfstream Aerospace long long before I envisioned doing CNC work.
I was doing mostly furniture then.

There is a piece of 4” thick, 9” wide 12 foot long mahogany and a couple thinner 15 foot ones. Also a few 2” thick zebra wood boards 14 feet long.

I have been saving this for many years looking for the right project. Maybe I should sell a few
Pieces to pay for a VFD upgrade😂

I could make a lot of boxes with that 2” walnut.
I haven’t tried machining mahogany yet. How does that do?

I am in the process of selling my home and finding a new one. I purchased a shipping container to move all my worldly belongings. When I get the shop done the container will be for my wood storage. A 40 foot container should make me go broke quickly

Good luck

I love the idea. Sadly my HOA wouldn’t. I can’t even have a shed. I do have a large playhouse that I may turn to wood storage but it is built on piers and I am not sure if it could support the weight.

I own the 2 lots on either side of my house, if I built something that looked like a house from the outside I could have a nice shop inside but that would cost an arm and both legs.

I have a large covered area in front of my shop. I store a lot of slabs and logs out there. There are times when everything gets wet because of winds during a storm. So eventually your wood will get wet being outside. So if you can put up some protection to keep the driving rain from coming in that would be good. Another thing to be aware of is bugs. There are bugs that like to eat dead wood and of course dead wood draw them in. So be sure to check periodically for infestations and spray around the wood periodically to prevent infestations.

Does the hoa have issues with green houses?

Build a solar kiln. Call it a green house and your golden

Hmm. Interesting thought.

I have plenty of room above my garage, but I would have to remove the pooltable. It is my office as well. However, all that weight may cause the floor to collapse on top of my machine negating the whole point😂

I covered my stuff with tarps after putting it in place. I came back home last night from a 2 week vacation and all was good.

However we are in the path of Debby and expected to get 14-20” of rain over the next 2”3 days. We will see how things look after that :joy:

I don’t expect any flooding as our house is high. We do have 2 creeks that cross on the property. I did engage the retractable wheels on my CNC table to give me an extra inch or so just in case

Don’t remove the pool table, that’s awesome.
Not everyone can boast that they have an office with that.
I need to rethink my set up. :joy: :+1:

Storage prices are all over the place depending on demand, i wish i could find a piece of commerical property and put up a storage unit facility, seems like easy money!

I have wood absolutely everywhere in my shop, multiple overhead wall racks, a mobile cart and still stacks and slabs everywhere. I think the point is it doesn’t matter how much space you have, it will always be filled!

I certainly felt like i was more organized when i worked out of my 3.5 car garage than now when i have a dedicated 30x50 shop space. I live on 12 acres, so i have plenty of space, and have been debating about putting up another building.

Lets hope you get a better response than they got in Houston a few weeks ago. I live about 4 hours from Houston but my family still lives there. They were out of power for over a week. That was a category 1 hurricane that came in at Matagorda bay which is 124 miles south of Houston so the cat 1 hurricane was a tropical storm with lots of rain and wind. The local light company, CenterPoint, was not ready. You know Houston has had a lot of hurricanes and yet they were caught completely flat footed.

So lets hope if you get hit it will not hurt too bad. Good luck and keep dry.

Being without power would certainly not be nice. If it’s out more than a day I will leave. It’s too hot to stay without AC. We don’t lose it often here but that last hurricane did put it out for a few days.

This one won’t be strong winds when it makes it to Savannah but lots of rain on top of a wet few weeks may lead to trees falling over.

I used to have a 1200sqft shop with a big wood rack but not at this house. Maybe I will again someday. Now I suffer a bit in my slightly oversized 2 car garage.

I agree about the storage unit gold mine. If so had the money and space to build one I could probably retire. Basically zero upkeep required except for hauling out the crap from people that don’t pay.
