Fairly new still to the CNC world
When I’m surfing walnut or any hardwood, I have it running an engraving tool path to get the side to side surface method. Not sure if thats even correct but has worked. When it travels left I’m burning the wood, when it travels right it’s perfect. Is there an easy method to telling the program to only surface when moving right?
I thought about making individual lines but wondering if there is a better method. Could even be wrong bit but works great to the right. Thank you
Hi Todd, I’ll let the experts answer but, you should provide the bit, speeds and stepover numbers.
Burning could be a speed issue, too much time in an area and not enough chip removal causes heat. have you just tried increasing the speed in CM by 10% - 20%
I have increased the speed and it seems to make the machine choppy sounding like it’s dragging. I can try upping the router speed I just thought the faster it spins the hotter it would get on the surface.
I’m using an inexpensive 1.0 surfacing bit right now
It cuts like butter going right
I do run into the same thing using a Mcfly. I’m sure it’s user error.
I run this one at 1k rpm , plunge rate 8.0, feed rate 25.00 on a Dewalt router with shapeoko 3xxl
I have a 5 pro and I use the McFly (and other) 1" surfacing bit with the following settings.
DOC: 0.1"
Feed: 120 IPM
RPM: 14,000
If I’m cutting less than 0.05" I’ll go 200 IPM. I do this in Walnut, maple, padauk and canary wood all day long.
