Table Overhang Question

Hey folks,

I am getting ready to pull the trigger on a Pro 5. I had originally thought of getting 4x2 and have a table that would fit on perfectly. The table is very sturdy and measures 48" x 72".

I now am leaning towards getting the 4x4 and am wondering if it would be ok to set it up on the above table. It would mean about 6" of over hang on both the front and back. Eventually I would make another table that would fit the foot print.

Thanks

Hey Brett

My opinion is you should go ahead and make the larger table mow. You would have the proper sized table from the get go and assembly would be on a good and correct sized surface. This would eliminate the need to switch over to the larger table later. I would be a better surface when assembling your new machine and would/could eliminate any room for error due to a smaller table.

Make it larger and allow room for your computer, shop vac, drawers and tool storage.

I just assembled the 5 Pro 4x4 and I would not want to do it on a 48" table. I get the impression it is not designed to have that much hanging off especially in the front. You could probably get away with having a few inches on the back of the machine hanging off the back but that is about it.

I have the SO5 Pro 4x4. It takes a long time to screw in all the aluminum pieces and the wasteboard pieces. I would set up the table for at least 60 x 60 before I started putting the machine on it.

The front edge of the front baseframe member should be even with the front of the table — similarly the back baseframe member should be fully supported on the table, the balance of the machine, ~8" or so may overhang if need be (it wouldn’t normally touch the table top).

I will eventually build a table to fit if I get the 4x4, but I just built this table and I was hoping I might get by for a month or so with it.

@WillAdams , I am not sure I follow. Any way you could provide a sketch of what you are describing? I am not sure I understand where the “balance of the machine, ~8” would be in reference to the table dimensions of 48"x72".

The machine has as its base 3 or 4 “Baseframe Members”:

only the bottom of those will be in contact with the surface of the table.

I built a 60x60 table for my Pro5 and wish i had done it a little larger. There are a few tiny parts that overhang that i learned the hard way when i attached something on the side of the table and the Y gantry motor ran into it.
