I have been running a Fusion5 FWIN232 Plus N4120 since I got my Pro XL (I looked it up and I ordered the tablet July 3, 2022)
This met the requirements for Carbide Motion at the time, but it seems the system requirements have advanced with time. The specs on that tablet are : 4GB DDR4 RAM, 64GB Storage and N4120 quad-core CPU.
I have a couple issues/question.
I started thinking about this since I went ahead and upgraded from CM 640 to CM 659 since folks were extolling its virtues. I also looked at updating the OS from WIN11 23H2 to what was newer.
I played around with 659 just jogging about but did not have time to cut anything. Seems ok.
What are going to be the failure modes if I am running an under memoried (4 GB ram vs 8 GB ram) tablet for Carbide motion?
Are there any configuration things I need to do to help the situation? Tablet’s only purpose in life is running the PRO XL. I transfer the files from the design computer through the home wifi network.
Drive space is so small I can’t even do win 11 release version updates. The tablet has an SD slot which I have 256 GB but I think the main drive being so small I can’t do the update. Any issues I might expect with staying on 23H2 for this application?
I’ve run CM640 for a while , so if the overhead is not more I am thinking I might be ok. But if I am not, suggestions on an affordable solution? And thoughts on future proofing?
I ran CM on a very old laptop a few years ago. I can not tell you which version or RAM I had ( i am thinking 32 ). Ran with systems shut down to squeeze more memory. Small projects cut well. Larger projects would freeze the system.
Pretty sure the system will swap memory contents to disk, slowing down
Only running Carbide Motion and minimizing other processes and not installing/running utilities/accessories should help
Rather than an update is it an option to get a Windows 11 ISO and install that if your product key will work with that version or you have a spare Windows 11 license
It’s only purpose in life is to run Carbide Motion, so shutting everything else down should be doable (If I can figure out how to kill off all the random stuff that windows starts).
If it just slows things that is ok, I’m just worried about crashes.
The Fusion5 fwin232 is a tablet that I believe the memory is not upgradable.(If I am mistaken I would love to hear that) The version (four years later) that has 8 or 12 GB is more than twice what I paid for the original tablet. I’ll have to keep my eyes open for a deal.
If it becomes non-functional, I have an old win10 laptop I can press into service but not a good place to locate it in my setup. (and its not a touch screen)
Is there a big resource requirement difference between 640 and 659?
Going Linux won’t necessarily fix the memory problem.
Too bad there is not a port to Android since there seems to be a ton of cheap tablets in that world.
They had an updated Fusion5 tablet with a $200 coupon $399 plus tax after coupon.

I was realizing the computer side quest was wasting time I could be doing something more enjoyable. Probably could have kept with the old tablet until something broke but…
